Making drawings as documentation of the one-day event “Something Happenseroic?” (25 August 2024), as the second event to bring SOMETHING, folllowing “Something Happensy” (25 August 2023).

The venue is ”Piacere”, where the interior was designed by Shiro Kuramata and completed in 1988. Due to changes in ownership and the type of business, it was not easy to get a better sense of the original design. Therefore, HATTARI MARI attempted to recreate the original condition by borrowing the shop for one day in exchange for cleaning and drawing with actual measurements.

After 25 August, the results of the cleaning and measurements were recorded as a material list with cleaning instructions and a measurement drawing. This archive will serve as a guide for future maintenance, as well as revealing past design ideas.

Through cleaning and actual measurements, we were able to re-read Kuramata’s spaces, including the user-friendly touches hidden behind the tense details (hidden picture rails and magnetisable steel inserts) and the playfulness of the acrylic joints and curved glass that connect the interior to the city.

After cleaning and measuring, a small party was held with the previous owners and others who knew the space from the past, and we left the place having restored it to its everyday state.
Kuramata’s interiors may be dreamlike, extraordinary and ephemeral, but the spaces that remain silent in the city of Tokyo in this way are also both everyday and urbane.
